Thursday June 14 Glacier NP

Drove from Rapid City South Dakota to Helena Montana.  Lots of rolling hills and lots of sky.   Plenty of driving, so we were glad to be done.  Camped at Lincoln RV park, which was just north of Helena.  Nice place and very clean.   Very crowded for this time of year, as they had a large group from an RV Caravan club staying there.

Thursday June 14 To Glacier

We left Lincoln RV Park at around 7:00am this morning.  Drove up to Glacier National Park.  Great drive on a 2 lane highway that we had to ourselves. The drive was  thru a valley with mountains to the left and rolling hills to the right.  Strong cross winds made the drive a little tricky.  There turned out to be a lot of construction very near the park which caused some delays in getting in.  Temps dropped as we went north, with winds of 25-30 mph, temp of 58 (wind chill of 54).

Got a campsite in Glacier NP.  One of the last.  This place is already getting busy.   Very cool here today, with temps here in the mountains around 50 degrees F.  Started raining and a bit of rain snow.  After that quit, we went for a drive on the Going to the Sun Road thru the park.  We could only go about 15 miles before the road was closed.  Apparently the road is still closed for the season until they can clear the snow from one particular area.  The Ranger called it "the drift", which was 60 ft. deep.  They have excavators working on clearing the snow and expect it open in July sometime.

Included a few pictures below.

Yep, the road was really closed

  1. So if the road is closed are you "stuck" or is there another route you can take?
