Friday July 13 Hanging in Homer

Slept in a bit this morning as we were out late.  Went for a run, before packing up and heading to Homer for the day.  It was supposed to rain today and be cool, so we packed a lot of different clothes, as we would be gone all day.  It was cloudy and temps around 48 when we left the campground.

Next to the campground was a boat launch area.  This was different than the boat launches we had seen anywhere else.  They had these big tractors that hooked up to boat trailer and hauled the boat out into the surf.  Quite an operation, that they can run no matter what the tide levels were.  Since the tide was way out this morning, they probably towed the boat 300 yards to drop into the surf.

Tide was out, so we took a drive on the beach in the jeep.  We went about a mile down the beach and turned around.  Pretty cool.  This is something we will do again.  Didn't know you could do this until getting here.  Can't do it down in Homer, but apparently  away from Homer, no problem  Of course, if you get stuck, you gotta call the towing company.  Clamming is a big deal up here in this area, but this year, they have shut down clamming on this side of the bay, because of low levels.  We figure that things could be a lot more crowded in the campground etc, if clamming was available.

Drove into Homer and parked in the middle of the Homer Spit.  We walked around the boat docks and shopping areas.  Ate lunch at a restaurant on the marina.  This was probably the busiest marina that we have seen, with all kinds of personal boats, fishing boats, charter boats and commercial fishing boats.  Always something going on.   After lunch we walked on the docks of the marina.  Surprised that there was no security as most of the time at marinas, they restrict access to the docks.

Started raining a bit while we were in town and continued off/on rain for the rest of the day.  Never got above 55 temp wise.
