Saturday July 21 Valdez Hiking trails

This morning, our plan was to go for a long hike on the Schoup hiking trail, which runs along Prince William Sound, just outside of Valdez.  We started the trail around 9:30 and hiked in about 1.5 miles before we were stopped by the trail being overgrown.  This trail was different than most of the trails we have seen here in Alaska, in that there was so much vegetation.  The trail ran right along the Sound and there wasn't any trees to block the sun.  Anyhow, after 1.5 miles, it was so overgrown that we had to turn around.  Really disappointing, as this trail had some pretty good reviews.

Instead we found another trail which was a historic pack trail used by miners and such over a 100 years ago.  They put this trail together to get a path thru the mountains for the mule pack trains.   Really cool trail thru the forest, which ran along the edge of a fairly steep mountain.  About 6 miles round trip.  Got a little hairy at times with the trail being very narrow and the drop off of the mountain was right there.   Not much of a photo type hike as we hiked deep in the tall trees most of the time.

Pack trail - Moss everywhere - Like a rainforest.  So different
to see large trees up here on a hike.  You could imagine a hundred
years ago, the prospectors trudging along this trail with a mule.  There was a
famous photo of an old prospector along this part of the trail.  I am trying to
find it.
Cindy along the trail

Had to stretch for a view off the side of the mountain.  Lots of growth
along the trail, but it still was straight down along the side.
