It was windy all
last night, but it was pleasant as we were in Chugach State Park. Temps started in the mid-60's and pretty
much stayed there all day, except for the hike we took later.
So we picked a trail
that was not too far from the campground today called the South Fork Eagle
River Trail. When we arrived at the
trail, there were bear warnings. We have
seen constant bear warnings everywhere
up here, but this one was ominous.
Apparently there was an attack a couple of weeks ago with a fatality and
just yesterday, a bear charged some people on the trail. But the trail was still open! In the lower 48 states, if there was a hint
of an actual bear sighting, they close trails, but they are much more casual up
here. So anyhow, we started on the
trail, but kept getting more nervous, and after a few miles, we gave up when it
started raining and returned.
Rained off and on in
the afternoon. We hung around the
campsite. Went for a run late
afternoon. In our walk after dinner,
there was a moose just hanging around the edge of the campground road. Didn't seem to care that we were there. We had no cameras or phones with us….

This was turning out to be a great trail, but the ever-present bear
thing, kept us from enjoying the hike

About the time we turned around. The views were great here. Just
didn't want to view a bear....

I think it was wise that you turned back.
