Thursday July 12 Drive to Homer

Drove from Captain Cook State Park to Homer.  Short drive (120 miles).  Temps were around 60 with sunny skies.

We were not sure what to expect in Homer.  The big thing at Homer is an area called the Homer Spit, which is basically a long sandbar that has camping, hotels, and boats.  Lots of boats.  By the brochures, we thought it would be cool to camp there at the Homer Spit, as it is surrounded by ocean and mountains.  However, the campgrounds were the jammed up type with barely any room between campsites.  A fairly hectic place.  We got out of there and went back up the road to the Halibut Campground in the Anchor River Recreation Area.  Cheap site with no utilities.  It is actually right on the ocean with huge campsites.  Our kind of place.  We figure that we can drive the 20 miles into Homer, but still stay in a quiet place on the ocean.

Went for a long walk on the beach as the tide was out.  Very large tides here and the beach becomes huge.  Seen eagles and otters in the ocean.  No whales (supposed you can see them from here).   Had a campfire, which was actually very nice as the temps were dropping quick.  We had a plan to wait out the sunset to take some pics at the beach.  Sunset was at 11:17pm, so a bit of a wait.  It was also dropping into the 40's temp wise.  Cool sunset though.
