Saturday July 28 Drive from Haines - Start our drive home

Got up this morning and went out for breakfast at a small café in town.  Really good.  Got all ready for the trip, which is unhooking from the electric and water at the site, gassed up the RV and Jeep, and hooked up the Jeep.  Got on the road about 10am.  Our destination was somewhere around Whitehorse.   Travelled up the Haines Highway to the Alaskan Highway and headed towards Whitehorse.   North of Haines, we crossed back into Canada and we should be in Canada for the next 5 days or so.

Ate lunch at a roadside pull-off along the Alaskan Highway.  When we reached Whitehorse, we gassed up and had planned on rolling on to a roadside pull-off for the night.  My brother Chuck and sister in law Bev have been starting their trip to Alaska and we knew that we might pass one another along the Alaskan Highway.  Cell phone coverage has been bad for both of us, but we knew that we might be able to meet up around Whitehorse.  Just outside of Whitehorse, we actually passed one another on a very narrow bridge.  I saw them, but they didn't see me.  We talked but were heading in opposite directions.

We stopped about an hour down the road from Whitehorse, at a roadside pull-off.  Very nice place, along a small creek.  Just by chance, this turns out to be a place that we stopped for lunch on the trip up.   We didn't recognize the place at first, but it came back to us.

Weather today was clear again, in the mid to upper 70's.   While the clear weather has been great for us in our travels, I wonder if it isn't getting too dry around here and could threaten forest fires.  They take forest fires very seriously up here.

Tomorrow we head towards Watson Lake and will probably stop again along the road.

On our way out of Haines.  This device is called a "fishwheel".  Works like
a paddlewheel, but is used to catch salmon.  Kind of famous in the Haines area.
I just thought the clouds were cool here - kind of blurry looking.
