Wednesday 8/1 drive to Malta Montana

We had some thunderstorms thru the night and some rain.  Went for a run this morning around the town of Carstairs.  Nice little town.   It was still raining a bit.  We got out about 9:00am.

Went around Calgary.  Was expecting a lot of traffic in Calgary, but it wasn't too bad as we were driving thru about 10am after rush-hour.  Our goal today was to cross the border back to the US.   Looking forward to having full service on our phones again.  After Calgary, the landscape changed dramatically to the plains.  We could see some mountains in the distance, but the drive was very flat.

Border crossing took a long time (1 hour).  This was the 6th time on this trip that we cross the US/Canada border.  All the other times, they were very small border crossings, with no wait.  This crossing had a stack of cars and trucks.

Our route home took us across HW 2 in northern Montana.  There are hardly any trees in this part of Montana.  Very dry and desert like.  Some road construction, but mostly a good drive, thru the small rolling hills in this part of Montana.  Amazing how far you can see with wheat fields going on forever.

Our plan was to stop at the city park to camp in Malta Montana.  However, it was really hot and the city park didn't offer electricity, so we opted for a private campground near the park.  Ugh…   Worse campground of the trip.  Bunch of rednecks in the campground with loud motorcycles.  Watched a big bus RV pull in and almost  take out the fence that bordered his site, because his RV was sooooo long.  Oh, and there was a very busy train track right in back of the campground.  Oh well, it gives me time to work on this and get ready to get out of here tomorrow.   I didn't include a pic of this campsite.

Temps today were quite warm, getting into the 90's.  Very hazy as well.  I expected it to be more clear than that.  The sun was out all day today.

North Central Montana landscape

No wonder they call it "Big Sky Country"
